Основная деятельность заключается в ведении чековых текущих счетов, принятии депозитных вкладов, получении и выдаче наличных денег и кредитовании. Дополнительными услугами являются доверительное управление и исполнение завещаний, предложение иностранной валюты, покупка и продажа ценных бумаг, страхование, система кредитных карточек и управление личными пенсионными фондами. Коммерческие банки также конкурируют с финансовыми домами (finance houses) и торговыми банками (merchant banks) в предоставлении венчурного капитала и со строительными обществами (building society) на рынке закладных. В результате серии слияний число коммерческих банков постепенно сократилось. Универсальное кредитное учреждение, создаваемое для привлечения денежных средств и размещения их от своего имени на условиях возвратности и платности. По договорам с клиентами осуществляет их кассовое, расчетное обслуживание, факторинговые, лизинговые операции (см. Факторинг, Лизинг, Банковский лизинг), покупку и продажу ценных бумаг, операции по трасту, учет векселей, кредитование и др. Коммерческие банки — независимые негосударственные банки (хотя и не исключается какая-то доля участия в них государства), которые работают на свой страх и риск. Иными словами, если банк правильно организует дело — привлекает много вкладчиков и денег, находит надежных заемщиков, которые всегда вовремя отдают долги, с выгодой оказывает иные услуги клиентам, — тогда этот банк процветает и растет. В обратном случае — может и прогореть. Если банк плохо выполняет свои обязательства и нарушает законы государства, Центральный банк может отобрать у него лицензию, то есть официальное разрешение вести банковскую деятельность. Коммерческие банки составляют костяк всей кредитно-денежной системы страны. Через них проходят все расчеты между фирмами, организациями, частными лицами.
